6 Ways to Tap Into Joy and Calm Amidst Chaos

Have you ever had the feeling that someone is looking at you? Maybe it was a longing glance from a future partner across the room. Maybe it was your child standing quietly beside your bed in the middle of the night. Maybe it was a bully entering a space, their intentions written all over their face.

The energy is palpable. We feel it before a single word is spoken.

There are moments when that energetic exchange feels gentle and familiar, like waking to your five-year-old after a bad dream and wordlessly pulling them close. Other times, it’s confusing or unsettling. We sense interest from a stranger. We bristle at the look of someone who doesn’t like us and instinctively wonder what their intent might be.

This is innate. We communicate constantly, without words.

My teen has always been especially sensitive to this. She feels what’s unspoken so clearly that it becomes overwhelming when words don’t match the energy beneath them. That mismatch can create anxiety, confusion, and a constant sense of vigilance. So, I teach her grounding techniques, not to dull her intuition or quiet her knowing, but to clear the noise. To help her move through the world with less anxiety and more trust in herself. More rooted in truth.

While we can’t control what others say, do, or think, we can choose how we respond. And that’s not always easy, especially when our reactions are tied to staying safe and sane. When things feel like too much, when that sense of safety feels threatened or slipping away, everything gets louder. We grip tighter. And that’s when fear and chaos can sink in, wrapping around us like a constrictor — immobilizing us, clouding our clarity.

So let’s talk about how we loosen that grip.

How we clear the noise.

How we return to truth — grounded, empowered, and steady.

Below is a meditation designed to be practiced regularly, so you can clear the noise more quickly, remember the truth, and take your next step from a place of grounded strength.

I use this practice regularly — and I teach it to my kids — because it works. This short, five-minute video helps shift us out of fight-or-flight and back into the body, grounding us so that we may cut the noise and have clarity and wisdom.

My Other Favorite Things Right Now

I am deep into helping out my community during these violent and confusing times. I live in a vibrant community and many of my neighbors are migrants. We feel a deep sense of sadness, anger and fear as we try to get people basic care. Give rides to friends because their parents are targeted not because of their criminal history or migrant status but because of their skin color. It's easy to get locked into that and get tunnel vision. These things are helpful for us to cut the noise and step into action with a clear mind.

This is one of the most powerful books I have read. I have been thinking about revisiting it as it has been on my mind a lot over the last week. I highly recommend!
